What is Medicare?
Medicare is federal health insurance offered primarily to people age 65 and older and disabled individuals under the age of 65. There is no such thing as a “one size fits all” plan. Everyone is different, and has specific needs and health issues. There are four parts to Medicare:
- Part A, which typically involves no monthly premium, but does require an out-of-pocket deductible ad coinsurance for care
- Part B, which does involve a premium and requires a calendar year deductible and coinsurance
- Part C, which is offered by private insurers contracted with Medicare and offers Part A and Part B coverage plus services not covered under A and B
- Part D, which is prescription drug coverage that is only sold through insurers contracted with Medicare and may be purchased as a separate entity or included with a Part C Medicare Advantage Plan (combining medical coverage and prescription drug plans).
